Kafue and Barotse Safari

A 14 day expedition exploring Livingstone, Kafue National Park, Liuwa Plains and the Barotseland region in western Zambia.

Your 13 night/14 day safari takes you to some of Zambia’s most remote safari destinations. Each destination is totally unique in its offering and experience. You will encounter Zambia’s two biggest waterfalls as well as the Largest and most remote wilderness area, The Kafue National Park. Liuwa Plains is a conservation success story home to the second biggest wildebeest migration. Its a park famous for its hyena clans and resilient Lion populations – a totally unique experience in its entirety!

Day 1 – 3: Maramba River Camp

Livingstone, Southern Zambia

Maramba River Lodge is ideally located just 4km from the Victoria Falls.

It provides a most attractive all-year-round accommodation base in a shaded woodland setting overlooking the Maramba River.  Maramba offers a wide variety of activities in and around the Victoria Falls which include river rafting adventures, falls visits and gorge swings and bungee jumping over the falls! There are also markets, museums and plenty of places to eat in town

Riverfront location

The camp is located on the banks of the Kafue River. Enjoy your early morning coffee as the mist lifts off the water or be treated to a sight of elephants swimming across the river.

Wildlife Sightings

 The diversity of safari activities allows you to immerse yourself iin the varied habitats this national park has to offer.

Close to Victoria Falls

This north western section of the park sees a minimal amount of visitors and safari operators. This means you will have most sightings to yourself!

Day 3 – 6: Nanzhila Plains Camp

Southern section of the Kafue National Park

Today you will depart Livingstone and venture north into Kafue National Park. Nanzhila Safaris operates in the closest true safari area in Zambia to the Victoria Falls and enjoys nearly 3000 sqkm almost to itself. Enjoy a game drive into camp, and settle into the beautiful rooms with views over the dambo to enjoy a two night stay. An incredible variety of wildlife and birding species as well as a magnificent location, overlooking the dambo make Nanzhila one of the most memorable safari camps in Zambia

Day 6 – 9: Kaingu Camp

Kafue River, Central Kafue National Park

After a morning activity, time permitting, you will leave Nanzhila Plains and start the journey North to the central Kafue! We will set up camp in the Namwala Game Management Area (GMA) on a spectacular and remote stretch of the Kafue River. The Kafue National Park, just opposite the lodge and only a 10 minute boat trip away, offers magnificent game that you can enjoy viewing from our comfortable open game drive vehicles.

The Kafue River, with all its myriad of channels, rapids and islands lends itself to a range of exciting river based activities which include boat cruises, fishing, birding, canoeing and river trails. From the top of one of the large granite boulders in the Namwala GMA you will get a 360° view over nothing but nature!

Kayak on the Kafue River

The section of the Kafue River around Kaingu is stunning and the boat cruises and canoe trips are an absolute must on this trip to complement the game drive experience.

Beautiful Scenery

The riverside setting at Kaingu is stunning with constant bird activity and the honking of hippos in the background.

Safari Walks

Large granite boulders which can be found around the lodge add a wonderful feature to  safari nature walks.

Day 9 – 12: Liuwa Plain National Park

Western Zambia

After a morning activity, time permitting, you will leave the Kafue and venture in a northwesterly direction to one of Africa’s oldest national parks, Liuwa Plains.  The journey will take approximately 7.5 hours, one of the longer transfers of this safari! We will set up a mobile camp in the heart of the plains.  The park is characterised by its spectacular flat landscape with wide-open spaces. Its seasonally flooded Zambezi floodplain is dotted with slightly elevated wooded islands.

You will most certainly hear the whoop of a hyena at night when sitting around the campfire. Interestingly enough, Hyenas are the apex predator here. It is believed there are around 350 individuals in the park! Other species of fauna include Lion, cheetah and wild dog.

Liuwa Plains Highlights include:

Africa-Under-Canvas Accommodation

Sleep like the explorers did; simple comforts under the african night sky! Doze off the sounds of the bush and wake up to coffee brewed over the campfire.

Sweeping Savannas

Breathtaking vistas, wildlife in abundance and sweeping savanna! Floodplains and lush islands for as far as the eye can see!

Excellent Predator Viewing

Expect to see hyena calns up to fifty strong in the park as well as prides of lion, wild dog frolicking on the floodplains and maybe an elusive cheetah.

Day 12 – 14: Sioma Falls Mobile Camp

Sioma Falls, Western Zambia

Sioma Falls is is the second largest waterfall on the Zambezi river. Here, the Zambezi is narrow and has deep fast flowing water, with cascading rapids and lots of black volcanic rock. The fishing at Sioma Falls is excellent and you stand a good chance of catching a big tiger. The camp overlooks an expanse of “coral white” beach and the basalt black cliffs which harness the mighty Zambezi River.

Zambezi Beaches

This camp is totally off the grid so you will dine under the stars and wake up to fresh coffee brewed over the fire!

River Jacuzzis

Flanking the falls are bubbling pools of water which provide the perfect spot to cool off from the midday heat!

Excellent Birdlife

The fertile riverine forests in this area make for great birding opportunities! Twitcher or not, we highly recommend a birding walk during your stay!
